About 1,800 gallons of untreated sewage spilled into Lake Norman on Tuesday, promoting health officials to issue a water quality swimming advisory for the area near Canvasback Road.

The overflow occurred near 407 Canvasback Road, off Brawley School Road on the town’s west side, while crews were performing maintenance to a valve on a pressurized sewer line.┬áSeveral crews responded to assist and were able to make the repair and assist with cleanup efforts, a town spokesperson said.

As a precaution, local health officials have issued a water quality swimming advisory for the area until laboratory water testing is completed, town officials said Wednesday morning.
